Throw it on the pile of "UCLA's administration remains staggeringly incompetent when it comes to sports."

Incompetence, history and change.

I do not know the history, so I will guess. Why was UCLA started? What were the guidelines? Was developing a family of semi pro sports part of the why?

Competence. To do what? Universal education?

Change. Why? Has the mission changed?

I await Bolch’s future summary piece.

Plenty of great academic institutions

have top tier athletics programs (Michigan, Washington, Duke, etc), and several mediocre academic institutions have vastly improved their academic programs via getting people engaged with their school via sports (USC, Oregon, etc).

We can walk and chew gum at the same time, but our admin seems to believe that actually supporting sports is either a betrayal of academics or going to come at the cost of academics, something that has been disproven at many schools across the country.

Just imagine how many millions they take in to keep those profs and graduate students who work for the profs happy....especially in the medical field. The last two Chancellors were hired to maintain the money flow. They recently purchased the West Side Pavilion and some downtown properties to start new research in biotech.

Yet they also field world class sports teams. We can do both, but we choose not to.

Michigan has 86 less national championships...

...than Ucla. We have teams that are runners-up or top ten at the end of the season in many sports every year. Obviously, it's football, and basketball of late, that are not close to getting the support Michigan and other top schools' football and basketball teams get. Duke has 17 NC's total. That makes Duke a top tier sports program or just top tier BB team? Are you just referring to FB and BB programs, because having 124 NC's and 144 overall championships is pretty good for not being able to chew gum while walking?

SC improved academically only after an intentional move to hire better staff and recruit foreign students.

Oregon is still a lousy school.
