I assume these folks are wealthy. Why not just donate a library wing to get their kids into a private school? That's how Legacy folks get into Harvard, Yale, Princeton etc...
Why "nickel and dime" your way in by doing small things that make it even more apparent that you are cheating the system?
really odd. |

The biggest coach ensnared in the scandal looks like Southern Cal water polo coach Jovan Vavic. He coaches both the men and women, and has won 16 national championships. The Southern Cal women's team is currently ranked #1. Vavic is also a 1992 UCLA graduate.
From one of the Southern Cal blogs, Vavic allegedly took a monetary bribe of $250k in exchange for designating two non-athletes as recruits. He also had the ringleader pay for both of his kids' private school tuition.

The situation with Salcedo is that he was paid to forward info about a student onto the UCLA women's soccer coaching staff. The DB article indicates that Salcedo's bribe was contingent on whether the student gained admission. Apparently, the student was conditionally admitted as a student-athlete.
None of the information says anything about whether women's coach Amanda Cromwell knew about this. But, it does throw into question how easily manipulated the walk-on spots are. From the other reports, I would assume that the athletic credentials were all fabricated.
