OT: Message from DG; not much but a lot to unpack
Posted Fri, Mar 22 11:47 am (Edited Fri, Mar 22 11:52 am)
Fairly routine statement from AD Dan Guerrero on the unfolding admissions scandal. Very generic, and it didn't even mention men's soccer coach Jorge Salcedo's resignation, even though it only happened yesterday.

It doesn't say much, yet there's a lot to unpack in the statement. The standard stuff about needing to review the evaluation process and explaining how the process works is normal boilerplate stuff.

But, reading between the lines, it sounds like the women's soccer coaching staff might get implicated in the scandal. In DG's explanation of the athletic admissions process, he states that the walk-on evaluation is a multi-step process that involves athletic administrative staff, but it places a lot of trust in the coach's word.

When DG says that "a breach of the system can obviously occur when individuals choose to act unethically, and contrary to the level of integrity that we expect," that seems to hint that more heads are going to roll.

From DG's description of the process, I don't see how Lauren Isackson's walk-on admission to the women's soccer team can be isolated only to Salcedo. Yes, he was the one who passed the falsified information onto the women's soccer staff. But, they would presumably have had to sign off on the recommendation to the athletic administrators and athletic-admissions committee (which is completely separated from the athletic department).

Either the women's soccer staff was way too deferential to Salcedo's word on behalf of Isackson, or someone along the way knew something was up and looked the other way (or at worst, was on the take alongside Salcedo). Isackson's admission was conditional on her playing with the team for a year. The question for Coach Cromwell is whether Isackson showed up for practice and what happened afterwards.

Either way, it sounds like the walk-on process will have to be completely revamped. And Cromwell has a lot to clear up, and fast.
