In response to Late Night spots while at UCLA (thelat)

Back when I hadn't turned 21 yet, and before coffeehouses with wi-fi and recharging stations were the outside study hangouts of choice, we liked to venture out to late-night diners.
For Tommy's, we used to venture out to the 24 hour location in North Hills. It had seating and was not as much of a hangout for the Southern Cal frat guys. Tommy's opened a location in Santa Monica in the early-90s, and it recently closed and got converted into a Starbucks.
I also went to Norm's on Pico quite a bit. We would bring our books and camp out in the section that the restaurant staff closed after 11pm (they kindly let us stay there to study). That location closed a few years ago (real estate became way too valuable).
Nearby, there was also Big Tomy's (one of the many fake Tommy's locations that are still commonplace throughout LA). I lived close to the location at Pico and Sawtelle, which was open 24 hours. It stuck around long after the Westwood location closed, and closed after a suspicious grill fire. They were supposed to reopen, but 4 years later it remains closed.
As a student, we also frequently ventured over to Dolores' over on Santa Monica Blvd, another 24-hour diner. The double deck hamburger was purportedly invented there before it made the menu at Bob's Big Boy and McDonald's. Sadly, it too succumbed to the times and closed a few years ago.
To previous generations of Bruins, there was also Ship's over on Wilshire. It closed before I went to UCLA, but we did occasionally go to the location over on La Cienega.
Another long defunct late night food hangout was Larry Parker's Diner over in Beverly Hills. The place featured a mile-long menu and the owner himself DJing during the late night hours.
Other 24 hour spots we used to frequent included Canter's and Zucky's. There was another 24-hour restaurant on Wilshire in West LA whose name escapes me. |

Tommys on Rampart had the showman cook with the long hair also the original Tommys. Pinks not as often but obviously hot dogs. Numay as said for the great steak sandwich and the thick milkshakes. Norms the 99 cent special 2+2+2 and hanging out.
I also remember Shipps and Picks |

Ships was open 24 hours. Chili size at 1am. I believe it was on Lindbrook and Tiverton. They had a toaster at the tables. |

Just 2.2 miles from UCLA by my odometer, I ate at home. The one place we would frequent, is still there. About eight years ago, a TV station ran a program on the country's best hamburgers. The first place featured was the Apple Pan. They served two kinds of burgers, the steak burger and the hickory burger. I could never decide which I liked better, so I ordered one of each. There were other tasty choices on the menu which I should have sampled, but for one reason or another, didn't. The Apple Pan is still there, but as close as it was to UCLA, for one reason or other, maybe because they didn't serve anything alcoholic, I don't think it ever caught on with the UCLA students. Also, as I recall, they didn't stay open very late. But, as Frank Sinatra would lament, "Diz wuz de blace." |

Was Kelbow's Hawaiian Barbecue, gone well before most of our current posters were even born. It remains a mystery to me as to why it never caught on with the patronage. |

near lot 32 after we were kicked out of the dental school lab. Still remember, double king chili cheese. That was when you’d yell out your order and when someone behind the counter yelled out “who had the xxx?” you always yelled back that’s mine before someone else did. LMAO! |
