In response to What was your hardest to take UCLA loss ever? (saturdaysarebetter)

It was hard to take at the time. Especially as it was a rescheduled game (The infamous Hurricane Bowl) and most truly believed that we would have won in September.
Hearing later that much of the team mailed it in due to dissatisfaction over Toledo's attitude towards some team members' political opinions makes it that much more unpalatable.
We had a shot at a national championship. Poof! Gone like Edgerrin James running through arm tackles. |

No doubt the Miami game in '98 was the worst, also the '06 game in South Bend vs ND was a heartbreaker. Dorrell showed he had no stones when we went 3 and out with a little over 2 min to play. 3 running plays when a first down would have clinched it. ND had done nothing all day but we played prevent D and they marched the field to score with 30 sec. And win That game was a tough one to swallow for me |

Flattened my ### after that tough one. The kind that stays with you for years. Battle of top ranked unbeatens for the Roses and UCLA loses 14-12. Both teams scored two touchdowns but Prothro fearful of a tie went for the two point conversion both times and came up empty. UCLA led 12-7 late in the fourth and it was desperation time for SC down to their last play 4th and 10. Jimmy Jones overthrew Dickerson but they called interference on Danny Graham giving SC new life. That led to the infamous TD pass to Dickerson's corner and many contend he was out of bounds. Just a killer loss that hit prothro really hard. I'm not sure but Danny Graham was so upset over the interference call he didn't return the following year. In those days it was Rose Bowl or bust no consolation bowls like today. |

We came in with Gary Beban, undefeated with one tie, and USC had one loss. We dominated the stats but they won on the famous run by their infamous murdering tailback. The real shame is that his run would have just been a footnote in history if our erratic kicker Zenon Andrusyszyn hadn’t missed an extra point, missed a 39 yard field goal, and had two others blocked because he kicked them too low. Painful to say the least! |

The infamous Afholter bobble on the winning TD is the play that everyone remembers. UCLA was heavily favored and on a roll heading into the game. But, combination of Bruin overconfidence, critical mistakes, and blown calls.
This one other moments of infamy.
The Eric Turner interception that ended the 1st half. ERock had a pick six but Rodney Peete tackled him by practically doing pull ups on his face mask. Should have been at least a 15 yard penalty and a free play deep in Southern Cal territory.
And then you had Troy Aikman tossing 3 INTs in the 2nd half, when he'd thrown only 3 all season.
This was all setup for the Bruins. Their most talented team probably ever, they already clinched a share of the P10, and had a chance to claim the title and the Rose Bowl berth outright. Everything turned in that 2nd half meltdown by Aikman and then the blown call in the end zone. |

2008 BYU.
I might be mistaken but I could swear UCLA had returning starters on defense there was talk we might turn a corner. RN kept Walker as DC and added Chow. There was a lot of hope that year. Instead, we got our ### handed to us and the season went downhill from there. We spent the next four years with a mediocre Neuheisal as coach. Worse yet, we had to listen to that smug jerk Carroll talk about how big the score was on that defeat. |
