UCLA adopted the famous powerkeg blue uniforms (as well as the Clarendon script numerals and shoulder hoops) under legendary coach Red Sanders. He wanted to differentiate UCLA from the navy blue that Cal used.
But, being savvy to the Hollywood scene, Sanders also picked PKB as UCLA's color because of how it looks when filmed in black & white. In B&W, anything red or a dark color (like navy blue) is going to photograph as pitch black. Lighter blue will photograph dark enough to contrast with white, but still contrast if the other team wears something like trogan red. If both UCLA and Southern Cal wore their home unis, and UCLA kept the navy blue, both teams would show up as dark black on a B&W image. |
