said. The southern league was a powerhouse before my time.
I was right about the occasional SF Valley teams but there is no mention of my h.s..
Arty, were you the one who sold the property to the LAUSD for LA High? |

The Tigers had one of the top programs in the 70's. Unfortunately, they sent all all their kids to $UC (Charles White, Anthony Davis, Kevin Williams, and the Moore brothers).
Cal-Hi sports ranked best city teams of all time:
1. 1971 Carson 2. 1980 Banning 3. 1974 San Fernando |

It was long ago and far away, at a time citing kahuna, when the L.A. City section was head and shoulders above the CIF Southern Section. That team was not listed in the top 10, only in the also ran section below the top 10. But those who saw that team would never forget it. It was the 1947 Washington team headed up by the IMMORTAL Hugh McElhenney. By himself, surrounded by Snow White's 7 dwarfs, he was good enough to make a credible team out of them. But something like 7 of his Washington teammates went on to earn D1 scholarships, and Cameron who was mentioned, became the starting quarterback at either Army (I think) when the West Pointers were still big news on the national stage, or perhaps Navy. The also had a huge, athletic line (they went both ways back then), and some good receivers, one of whom was named Pearson (I dated his younger sister later on). I doubt that any of our posters ever saw that team, and whomsoever compiled this list certainly did not, but for those inclined to ask the opinion of this ancient mariner, that is the REAL #1, hands down. No....I didn't see but 2 or 3 of the aforementioned top 10, but I didn't need to. If anyone saw, or even heard anything of that 1947 Washington team, please pitch in. |

Co-coach Paul Heubner was a neighbor and chuckled about his good fortune, namely the influx of Pacific Islanders to within Carson's attendance area.
These were big kids who liked to hit. One year his O-Line from tackle to tackle averaged over 300lbs/man. They had trouble scheduling pre-season non-league games because other coaches didn't relish their players going up against Carson's super-size linemen. One year they scheduled a pre-season game against a California central coast team. Some of the Samoan players wore their lava-lava's and as they got off the bus some girlie-man type comments were made by a few of the home team's fans. This was a bad idea because Paul said that Samoan's can get very angry. They did and the final score said so.
RIP Paul.

they were very dominant. Saw the greatest kickoff return play, where the entire team gathers in a huddle around the 20 yard line after the kick is received, then like a fireworks display, everyone runs in a different direction, each person running as if they have the ball in hand. Crazy. |

about where the best HS football in the entire was played and that was LA City football. Carson and Banning led the way but there were many other good teams in the 70's and 80's. When the demographics in those areas shifted and the great coaches left Carson and Banning began to decline in football and other sports. Private schools now dominate the HS football landscape nation wide but those of us that remember the 80's will never forget how good those teams were and how many NFL stars were born there. |
