I would think Fulton Kuykendall needs to be on that list somewhere. He was one of those guys that made the defense and those around him better. He played 11 yrs in the NFL and led the lowest scoring defense in history. |

1. Jerry Robinson - I don't remember this guy but watched highlights when I was a kid. I remember him more as a pro don't remember his college career at all. Started as a wide receiver. Switched to defense his sophomore year. 3 time all american
2. Jamir Miller - I remembe this guy. Made big play after big play on the blitz. If he stayed all four years he may have been my number one.
3. Carnell Lake - loved this guy because he was undersized and his speed was a nightmare. Returned kickoffs. a high school tailback. One of my all time favorite UCLA football memories is this guy playing. Myles jack before Myles jack. More of a team player than Myles.
4. Anthony Barr - fellow Loyola alum. I resisted the temptation to raise his ranking. He had all the tools and was wasted on offense for 2 years.
5. Ken Norton - As he aligned with the dark side of the force . I resisted the temptation to remove him all together.
6. Roman Phifer - what an athlete
7. Donnie Edwards - made big play after big play... big time.
8. Eric Kendricks - Mr. Consistency -- I wish every linebacker had his discipline and work ethic. Three things we could rely on were... death taxes and Kendricks.
9. Marvcus Patton - crazy athletic.
10. Spencer Havner/ Robert Thomas -- havner was not exciting and that was exciting about him. He always was where he was supposed to be. He never went for the "big hit" but made a form tackle wrapping up like everyone is taught to do.
Robert Thomas-- IMO never got his due at UCLA... politics.
Yes, i realize I did not include myles Jack. I think Myles was a great player... but looking at his linebacker play in isolation I do not think he had the career the other had and thus did not make my list. He played great for a freshman who didn't know the schemes. Soophomore year often out of position... made big plays and gave up big ones. I thought he was going to put it all together his Junior year...but he got hurt. I am still in awe and thus respectful of his immense talent.
A shout out to Tommy Taylor the Chattanooga Choo Choo. (freight train) 00 he and Jack are my honorable mentions.
So many good linebackers... too many to list.

Heard that those two always played both sides of the ball the whole game along with Woody Strode. Was Jackie a safety or a linebacker on defense? I think Kenny Washington played linebacker, but was an All American at quarterback. They must have been in some outstanding physical condition. |
