Why does this feel more like college football

...than what we see today? I felt so excited, so connected then, to our team, win or lose and the entire atmosphere that, today, is so mired in marketing, media control, and runaway expenses for salaries and facilities. I am one of those who gave up my season tix after almost 30 years because it simply stopped being fun. I can justly be accused of throwing a wet blanket on all the buzz of the upcoming season, but, I have to say, my passion has waned as has my interest. To me, it's all summed up by the ongoing athletic dept policy of only allowing stadium wide cheers at the beginning if each half so that, thereafter, our eyes are always moved to the video board which is absolutely polluted with marketing. The '95 game was awesome in the string of 8. I've framed a T-shirt I bought after #8 (with a football bearing Bruin and the slogan "8 for * feels great!"). It lists the scores of all the wins...so magical. This isn't about last season's disaster...this is about branding and marketing taking all of the passion out of the game for fans. I won't go through my long list of changes that have brought me to this point...kinda sad. Call me jaded. Thanks for posting the video...I could watch it all day long!

Brings back memories of USC homer announcer Tom Kelly

For those of you unfortunate enough to be able to remember him, he was an annoying homer who was prone to whining in a high pitched voice. In this game he was up to his usual stuff, whining and second guessing the coaching staff. Beating USC is always wonderful, but when he was there it was even a bit better.

Even before I took sides in the rivalry, I found his game calls incredibly annoying. He wasn't that great an announcer to begin with. Of course, this was an era in which LA had guys like Vin Scully, Chick Hearn, Bob Miller, and Dick Enberg setting the bar for everybody else.

A lot of Bruin fans complained (yeah, I know, kinda redundant) about long-time announcers Fred Hessler and later Chris Roberts. But, like many of the best LA announcers, both of them did their jobs in a very professional manner, without the excessive homerism and biased whining that Kelly brought.

Current Bruin radio announcer Josh Lewin is definitely a Bruin homer, more so than past UCLA radio voices. But, he's so damned good at tracking the game and conveying the excitement of the moment, that I can live with his obvious pro-UCLA bias.
