1997 Season

  • Pac 10 co-champions with WSU, earned trip to Cotton Bowl versus Texas A&M. They finished with a #5 national ranking.
  • The victory in the Cotton Bowl gave UCLA a 10-win season for only the fifth time in school history - 1946, 1982, 1987, 1988 and 1997.
  • UCLA has won 10 straight games in a season for only the second time in school history. In 1946, UCLA won all 10 regular-season games but lost in the Rose Bowl. The Bruins also won 10 in a row in 1954-55. In 1954, UCLA won all nine of its games, capturing a share of the National Championship, and won its opener in 1955.
  • UCLA's 52 points in the win over Washington were the most by a Pac-10 team against the Huskies in 23 years.

  • UCLA allowed an average of 20.4 points per game, ranking second in the Pac-10 and is its best since 1993 (19.2).
  • Despite allowing 361.3 yards per game, the UCLA defense was second in fewest touchdowns allowed (25) and T-2nd in lowest average per play (4.8) during the regular season. UCLA led the league with 21 interceptions and tied for the lead with 14 touchdown passes allowed. On the ground, UCLA tied for second with 11 touchdowns yielded and tied for third with an average of 3.1 yards per carry allowed.
  • UCLA forced 39 turnovers (second to Wyoming's 42) in 11 regular-season games, an average of 3.5 per contest.

  • UCLA outscored opponents 223-86 in the second half (112-34 in the third quarter and 111-52 in the fourth).
  • In 12 second halves, the Bruins allowed just 10 touchdowns (one each versus Washington State, Arizona, Houston, Oregon, Oregon State, Stanford, Washington and Texas A&M and two against California) and five field goals.

  • Four players earned All-American honors: tailback Skip Hicks, offensive tackle Chad Overhauser, punter/place kicker Chris Sailer, and free safety Shaun Williams.
  • Cade McNown was one of three finalists for the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award. He was named Most Outstanding Offensive Player of the 1998 Cotton Bowl.
  • Place kicker Chris Sailer was also one of three finalists for the Lou Groza National Placekicker Award.
