the page formatting; font and resolution is superb. the "or" player deserves to be in bold too.

i think the transfer from uw latu latu needs to be listed. he got 2 inches and 30 pounds(guess) on the listed starter.

hopefully the true freshman four star kamari ramsey will play a lot early to accelerate his usefulness. he is long and fast i guess. not sure but hopeful.

i think we had issues at ot until raquan smith showed up. this brian fina was outside my brain which is easy to claim.

titus listed a non-starter us a good call.

thanks from the only one here with an opinion.

root beer!!!

let's go bruins!!!

Defensive End

1: Bo Calvert, super senior
2: Carl Jones, senior
3: James Dinneen, redshirt junior
4: Laiatu Latu, redshirt junior – INJURED

"After appearing in 12 of 13 games in reserve as a UW true freshman in 2019, Latu was injured in fall practice leading up to the following season. He didn't play in the pandemic-shortened four-game schedule."

Sports Illustrated

Latu was pegged to be a Husky starter in 2020 until he went down and was replaced by Zion Tupuola-Fetui, who was sensational in three of the four games he played while stepping in for him and earning All-Pac-12 accolades.

Program insiders still maintain that Latu was a much better player than Tupuola-Fetui before his injury.

Latu, if he can pull this off, will go three years between playing games on the college level. He has three seasons of eligibility remaining because of pandemic allowances.

Latu will start if healthy

He’s an absolute beast, and that was as a freshman, he’s even bigger now. He is the surprise wrinkle to this D, if he’s healthy he is a difference maker. Watch.

the first three games are a rare opportunity to test personnel groupings. If Andrus remains the answer at DT, I think we will see a lot of the depth chart we released, but if one of the Murphys can move inside, I think Latu will be in the two deep at DE no question.

Love that you're doing this BG. I've spent far too much time on Ourlads and other sites that list depth charts, glad to see one on a site I frequent.

Couple thoughts from what I've heard:

-I hope Deshun Murrell breaks out as RB 2, but at least for game 1, I think Chip's putting Keegan out there as the main backup. I expect we will be using Kaz as a sort of De'Anthony Thomas-lite this year, all over the field, and I expect he'll end up with at least 5 or 6 carries a game.

-You nailed the TE depth chart, IMO.

-OL is hard to project given zero practice film, but I think Raekwon is our #1 LT, and DiGeorgio is our #1 RT, but that's pure conjecture. You could have nailed it here and I could be way off base.

-Also nailed the WR depth chart IMO.

-Apparently the Murphy twins are so good, they're both projected to be starters (just the scuttlebutt I've heard). My guess is one of them takes the 3-technique slot next to the NT, and the other takes the SSDE position. I expect we'll see plenty of Andrus at 3-tech.

-As for rush end, I hope we don't start Calvert. I like the kid a lot, but he's not a difference maker there. Jones is an excellent player, and I think should be given the nod. But if we're predicting actual likelihood of starting, I think you nailed it that Calvert will get the nod.

-LB is tough given injuries. I hope Medrano is back soon, but I don't expect him to play Saturday. I think Choe Bryant-Strother or Jon Jon gets the nod at WLB. I think you are right Muasau has locked up his spot (hence the Caleb Johnson transfer).

-I think you took a shot and nailed CBs. I think Humphrey makes a big jump and takes the top spot alongside Kirkwood. After that, your guess is as good as mine.

-I think Azizi Hearn fits in there somewhere at Safety or Nickel, not sure where. IIRC he was starting at Nickel, hopefully he can replace some of what Qknight brought us.

It has sounded from early on that Raiqwon O'Neal has the LT spot nailed down...

Seemed to me BOTH Murphy twins could be on the field together (opposite end spots?)

Not sure how having a linebacker play the D-line will play out but I agree that Carl Jones has been all over the field the last couple seasons. Hard to see how he or Calvert still couldn't contribute as LB's.....

So happy to be back in game week! Great first cut and good comments in the follow-ups. As we all have seen, football has become such a situational sport with specialization and substitutions on nearly ever play. A few friendly notes below to account for the personnel groupings we'll see to start the year.

-Global: many of those guys in italics have been scholarship players for several years. UCLA has a legit walk-on program now and a ton of players are FBS scholarship worthy. Might make sense to just remove the italics.
-TE is now a specialty position since those guys can do so many things. Ezeike and Habermehl can play in the slot. Priebe is more of the in-line variety. The freshman can do both and Summa is Habermehl 2.0.
-Tackles: DiGiorgio has been battling with Taupaki at RT. Manoa/Fina will be next guys up behind those two and O'Neal.
-Liam Douglass is out for the year (too bad, has the athleticism to contribute as a swing player)
-Base alignment is likely to be 4/2/5, although different than under previous management. Suggest the positions go as follows -- DE/DT/NT/DE/MLB/WLB/NB/CB/S1/S2/CB
-DE: Murph1 or Murph 2 / Latu / Aupiu
-DT (3): Sykes/Somerville / Kaufusi / Harris
-NT (0): Andrus or Toia or Smith / Magna
-DE: Jones or Murph 1/2 / Calvert
-MLB: Darius / Kaho (inj) / Vaughns
-WLB: Bryant-Strother or Medrano (inj) / Vaughns / Pitts
-NB: Hearn (3 corner) or Churchwell (3 safety)
-CB: Kirkwood / Davies
-S1: Blaylock / Churchwell
-S2: Osling / Nimmo
-CB: Humphrey or Hearn / Newcombe

A lot of food for thought.

I’m with you on the italics. It is only meaningful during the recruiting season to analyze how many scholarship spots are available.

First time I heard Douglass being out for season. Can you share verification?

Regarding defensive scheme, this is the first time I’ve heard of the 4-2-5 base defense. I see a 4-3-4 base, where the WLB position can be flexed to either a rush end or a nickle depending on the situation.

Liam was at the kickoff dinner and has been in a large brace observing practice since early in camp. UCLA isn’t going to release an honest depth chart this year, it will be a list of players conforming to the 4-3 alignment. Almost everyone on the schedule runs primarily 11 personnel, with 12 and some variations of that less frequently. You really need 5 DBs on the field more often than not. Where it gets interesting is how they mix and match the Murphy’s and Latu, who can all play the traditional edge or slide down into the Sykes/Somerville spot. There is a lot of flexibility with the group up front.
